Designer Interview: Rachel Ashwell

[I recently returned from Quilt Market, a fabric trade show in Houston, where my debut line with Andover Fabrics was previewing.  I had the chance to interview a few other talented designers + am so happy to share their incredible words of wisdom and encouragement.  I hope you enjoy!]

The day before the trade show floor opens at Quilt Market there is an entire day devoted to “Schoolhouse Presentations” where designers, fabric companies, and other exhibitors give 15 to 30 minute talks.  The morning of the schoolhouse presentations, you can pick up a copy of the list and choose between 10 or so talks for each time slot.  Well, the minute I saw Rachel Ashwell (creator of Shabby Chic) on the list, I knew I had to go.  Except that surely Rachel Ashwell herself wouldn’t actually be there?!  This must have been a typo.  I prepared myself for disappointment.

You guys, she was really there!  I walked in the room, and there was Rachel casually draping some of her fabrics over the folding table at the front of the room.  She even had a small vase of flowers with her at the podium where she talked about the Treasures fabric collection and showed a few previews from her new book, Shabby Chic Inspirations.

While my home is pretty far from Shabby Chic style, I grew up loving her television show.  She always talked about decorating with such sincerity and passion.  I feel she made it “okay” for many people to admit that they wanted things that were pretty and feminine and beautiful.  So it was really inspiring to see her present some sneak peeks into her process and some inspiration images of how she uses fabrics and quilts in her home and work.

About half way through her talk, I realized that if I was serious about rounding up some interviews with other designers, I would be an idiot not to at least go up and ask.  So I did my best to channel Oprah and asked her if she had a moment for a few questions.  She was so gracious and kind.  I wish you could hear her answers in her own voice (especially to question #3), but I think the answers alone are lovely –

Is there something you are most excited to be showing off at Quilt Market?

Yes.  It’s the archival Shabby Chic fabrics.  These have been in the archives for 22 years, and I’m excited to be sharing them with the public.

What keeps you inspired?

Flowers, my garden.  Wanting to be feminine, to be fresh, to be romantic.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

To really follow your intuition.  I always say “there is a designer for everything but not one designer for everything.”  Every time I’ve said “oh, I don’t really like this but the market needs it, it’s been a big flop.”  So listen to your intution.  Do your own thing.  Do it well, and keep at it.

Author Interview: Jessica Levitt

Jessica_1

[While I was at Quilt Market with Andover Fabrics, I had the chance to interview a few other talented designers + am so happy to share their incredible words of wisdom and encouragement.  I hope you enjoy!]

The first year I attended Quilt Market, I did not know a single soul so I nervously sent Jessica Levitt an e-mail asking for her advice.  She was launching her debut line with Windham Fabrics at the time.  As I flew to Houston that first year, I took comfort in the fact that I at least “knew” one person.  She turned out to be just as nice as she had seemed in her e-mail.  Not only did she cheer me on as I took my portfolio around to the various companies, but she also gave me a very sage piece of advice — “you have to want this more than anything else and just keep at it no matter what.”  Well, turns out Jessica was right.

I am so excited to have her here to answer a few questions about her new book — Modern Mix from Stash Books.  Jessica’s attention to detail and eye for design are pretty legendary, so it’s no surprise that the book is gorgeous.  I hope you find as much encouragement from Jessica’s advice as I have –

What are you most excited to be showing off at this Quilt Market?

My book! (Modern Mix) It’s such a long process writing a book that it’s thrilling to be actually holding it in my hand and even signing copies…

What keeps you inspired?

I never lack for inspiration.  I get it everywhere.  For sure coming to Market gets the creative juices flowing.  It’s like my brain is absorbing all the amazing design and fabulous colors and squashing them all together and hopefully spitting out something that is uniquely me.  I love to be inspired by nature, architecture, art, and even my children’s drawings.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

You have to find your own voice and be true to that.  It’s not easy to turn creativity into a career and if you want to, you’ll have to work hard and never give up.  I believe there is so much talent out there and it excites me to see new designers emerge.  I remember encouraging you when you first got started and look how that turned out!  If it’s your dream, just keep at it.

What has been the biggest surprise you’ve encountered when writing a book?

Well, I have a hard time letting go of control, so it was difficult to turn the manuscript over to the designers at Stash to make it all pretty.  I did get to give lots of input on the design, but I was doubtful that they could really capture my style.  Boy was I pleased when I saw that it turned out even better than I could have imagined!

Fall Quilt Market 2011 (I’m home!)

pat_bravo[Photo of Pat Bravo's booth at Fall Quilt Market 2011]

Hi there!  I’m back from Quilt Market and wanted to pop in and say hi.  Thank you for all of the positive thoughts, prayers, and good luck messages you sent my way.  I truly appreciated each and every one.

I had a wonderful time with my new fabric family at Andover.  I’m really excited to be with such a talented, funny group of people who truly care about each other and their customers.  It has been such a long road to get to this place that I really tried to soak up every minute of it.

On Saturday, as I walked the show floor I got to meet lots of new faces and hear about other people’s dreams of designing fabric or patterns or books (even jewelry!).  I know firsthand how tough it can be to put yourself out there, so I consider it a personal responsibility to encourage other people and share what I know.  Many other designers did that with me, and I am so happy to pass it on.  Why else are we here?

It feels so good to be able to say from my own experience:  You really can do it if you’re willing to put in the work and keep at it no matter what.  Do not give up.

I had a bit of an adventure getting home.  I had three connecting flights to get from Houston to LA courtesy of our frequent flyer miles.  Everything was going so well until I reached Phoenix where the last flight to LA was cancelled.  Apparently, the flight attendant was injured, and they were unable to find a replacement.  I counted myself lucky that I was not the one being carried off on a stretcher and settled in for an unexpected stay at the Sheraton in Phoenix.

I am so happy to be home but still pretty tired.  Doing the airport thing two days in a row with really over-stuffed bags is not that great.  All told, what should have been a 3.5 hour trip home took nearly 24 hours.  So glad I finally made it!

I was able to get a ton of great feedback on my new sewing patterns, so I’m going back to the drawing board and making some more improvements.  I really want to put something out there that is truly ready and will give people great, consistent results.  I know it will be worth the wait.  It sounds like the early preview of my fabrics went pretty well — so look for me next Spring.  It’s going to be a party around here, and I can promise a few sneak peaks in the meantime.

And – yes, I did take some photos! The mini-interviews I did with other fabric designers and interesting peeps at the show were amazing.  Beyond inspirational. I’m sorting through everything this week and contacting a few other folks via e-mail who were busy or wanted time to think about their answers.  However, please check back in for lots of great advice from everyone from Rachel Ashwell to Pat Bravo.  They said such encouraging things.

So what did I miss?  Anything good?  I’ll be catching up on all of your blogs and e-mail messages this week.  (And P.S. – if you’re new here, I’d love for you to say hi and introduce yourself.  There’s even a newsletter sign-up at the top so we can keep it touch.)

I Miss You (and send me your questions!)

Reflections[Photo: a quiet moment at Descanso Gardens a few weeks ago...]

I miss my blog so much.  I miss sending notes to friends and leisurely weekend mornings and eating lunch.  I have given it all up.  It has been a mad dash to get ready for this trip to quilt market on Thursday.  My husband has been grocery shopping twice this month which tells you how bad it’s been.  He also scrubbed the bathrooms.  (?)  Let’s just say that the list of people I owe when I get back is ridiculous.

[Is anyone curious about what Quilt Market is?  I gave a little explanation once here.  This trip, Andover Fabrics will be previewing my new fabric collection on paper.]

I will be walking around with some samples of my new sewing patterns trying to meet with distributors and (hopefully) learning as much as I can.  I will also be taking pictures.

I know there comes a point in most designer’s lives where they sort of stop photographing other people’s stuff and really just show their own work.  This makes sense for so many reasons — not the least of which is that they are all very busy at the show and hardly have a chance to sneak in a snack let alone go around taking photographs.  I thought about this a bit and decided that I still would like to share as much of what I’m seeing as I possibly can.  (I’m not sure I could do this if I had a booth, and I certainly do not fault anyone for deciding not to do this.)

However, this year, I’ve decided that I am also going to try to interview as many designers and interesting people as I can possibly fit into one action packed morning. True Up is still the best source for detailed quilt market coverage, and there are other talented people taking great photos of the show.  I’m not trying to compete with them.  Instead, I’m just going to ask a few questions digging a little deeper into the heart of this whole thing:

  • What are you most excited to be showing off at this show?
  • What keeps you inspired?
  • What advice would you give to someone else who wants to pursue their own creative dream?

I would LOVE to ask your questions, too — so if you have any ideas for me, please send them my way.  Then check back late next week, and we’ll see what we can learn from all of these talented folks.  Thanks so much for sticking around.  As I’ve been working like a frantic, busy little bee I picture so many of you who visit here regularly, and it makes it worthwhile.

See you soon!

Fall Market Recap: More Japanese Goodies

QM_Melly5

Today, I wanted to share with you some more Japanese cute from Fall Quilt Market.  (Warning: this post is long and image heavy, but I’m afraid we’ll fall behind if I don’t step it up over here! Off we go…)

First up is an adorable mouse purse, headband (!), and applique t-shirt from Melly & MeRosalie had two booths this year (Melly & Me, with her sister) plus her fabric line through Lecien, and I’m not sure how she pulled that off since both were stuffed with adorable and detailed pieces.  I guess when you’ve been making cute stuff this long, you can do it in your sleep.

QM_Melly

There were monkeys jumping on the bed.

QM_Melly8

I am in love with this snowman (named “Snowflake”) and may have to make a few for some little friends this Christmas.  The embroidery on these doll’s faces (below) is so sweet, too.

QM_Melly9

Rosalie’s booth for Lecien was equally beautiful.  There were plenty of quilts, appliqued purses, fabric bags, and more.

QM_Melly2

By the time I left the show, I really was in the holiday mood.  I love this “Home for Christmas” piece.  I’m craving some comfort in-front-of-the-tv sewing, so this may be perfect.

QM_Melly3

One of my favorite fabric friends is Brenda Riddle who also has a line with Lecien.  Her booth was so warm and welcoming (just like Brenda).  Her attention to detail just blows me away.  Every square inch of her booth was covered in intricate, perfectly crafted pieces.  I am so inspired by her love of her art.

QM_Brenda4

Next, we’ll hop on over to Hokkoh where they had some very unique displays – including these funny cats.  My favorite is the one on the left with his eyes closed.

QM_Hokkoh

There was also a fairly large tea set that I really liked.  The teapot was quite impressive up close.

QM_Hokkoh3

Here’s one last shot of the Hokkoh booth.

QM_Hokkoh2

Last, but certainly not least, is Sunfelt.

QM_Sunfelt2

Every year they come up with more new felt kits for me to fall in love with from cookies and desserts to fairytale wind-up toys.

QM_Sunfelt1

I really love this squirrel as well as the donkey.  (Can you see the tiny flower on the donkey’s bridle?  So cute!)

QM_Sunfelt4

Tomorrow, I’m thinking we’ll cover Tula Pink and a few surprises (maybe a fabric covered bike?).
