DIY Picnic (Part 9): The Insulated Pouches

Picnic_pouches4

I know that yesterday was the grand finale DIY picnic post, but I had one more craft project to share.  Of course, one of the key aspects of any picnic is keeping all that food hot or cold.  This is a very simple DIY cold pack.  The outside is just two rectangles of ordinary fabric, but the inside lining is the silver ironing board cover material they sell at the craft store.  You could also use some of the fleece-interfacing for making hot pads, etc.  Since this is a cold pack, the ironing board material worked just fine and was a little more cost effective.  (Also, please note that those are my husband’s hands in the photo below.  Mine are less manly, I promise.)

I purchased one of these inexpensive (and reusable) ice blankets that you can cut to whatever size you need.  I cut mine to lay flat along the bottom of the picnic basket and arranged all of my food containers on top.  Total elapsed time: less than 30 minutes.

I like that the pouch still transmits the cold without condensation getting on everything.  Happy picnicking!

The DIY Picnic (the finale)

lepiquenique9
The past couple of days here in LA have felt like Fall, so I think we wrapped up the DIY Picnic just in time.  For the past two months, I’ve been posting a series of picnic projects — everything from a picnic blanket to fancy lace napkins — and this weekend my husband and I celebrated the grand finale with a lovely picnic in the park.  There was one bee incident which required us to relocate our picnic to another spot, but other than that, we had a wonderful time.  It was so nice finally getting to use all of these fun things I’ve been making.

Here’s a quick recap and links to all of the picnic posts and instructions:

Now, onto the picnic itself…

For food, we stopped at the deli and picked up some éclairs, a fresh baguette, jam, cheese, cold cuts, and berries.  (Honestly, if you want to feel really great about something you’ve made, just put an éclair next to it.)

What I love about these photos is that everything here is handmade.  However, even if you’re not a DIY-er, you could pull together a really unique picnic set with some clever shopping.  For me, the best part was picking a theme and having fun deciding what my perfect picnic would be.

Shall we take a little tour?  Up above is the embroidered jar lid tied with my favorite black/white striped ribbon.lepiquenique15

The picnic basket with the patchwork top made a great table.

My favorite part is that the inside of the picnic basket is a chalkboard.  It was perfect for a welcome message.  (I think I’m wondering if I put on enough sunscreen in this photo.)

Here are the cute napkins.

And, of course, the messy, gooey action shots:

My husband is the best sport ever.  Look at him sipping from this teacup.  And yes, there is something  a little strange about setting up the camera to take pictures of yourself while on a picnic — but I just considered it free entertainment for the other people at the park.  It’s possible that the picnic might be a bit too frilly for my husband’s taste.  However, I did offer him the éclair, so I think we’re almost even.

All in all, it was a really nice way to commemorate the end of summer.  I could feel the stress melting away by the time we packed everything up to head home.

So are you ready for Autumn now?  I went shopping this weekend and some of the stores had that cinnamon smell, so Fall is definitely in the air.  I’m off to plan what’s next…

DIY Picnic: Part 8 (The Napkin Roll)

Picnic_pouches

Happy Friday, everyone!  We are  in the home stretch of the DIY Picnic for Two project.  Today, I have a napkin roll to share.  (This is kind of dorky, but I keep wanting to call that photo up top “Spooning.”)

This week, I also finished up the insulated pouches, but I’m having a lousy camera day so I’ll share some pictures of that project next week when I do the big final reveal.  All of my batteries died today.  I think they are feeling a little burned out this week – and I kind of understand.  It’s been busy around here!

Ok, back to the napkin roll.  If you remember, I needed a place to store the flatware for the picnic, so I sewed up a little flatware organizer.  This project is very simple – just two rectangles sewn together with little stitched pockets for the forks, knives, and spoons to slip into.

I folded the top down by a 1/2″ or so, rolled it up, and tied it with some light blue twill tape.  I used some more of the key fabric for this project, and I love how it looks paired with the linen.  After all of the crazy bursts of color on the picnic blanket, it was a refreshing change of pace to work with a neutral color scheme.

Thanks for dropping by this week — and for all the love on the new superbuzzy collaboration.  Wishing you a very happy weekend!

DIY Picnic: Part 6 (The Blanket)

Picnicquilt

I finished it!  The picnic blanket is done.  I am wrapping up my last two projects for the DIY Picnic for Two.  I have just one more project to share with you, and then we’ll call it complete.  I am planning to savor all of this hard work this weekend, soaking up some of the lingering warm weather with a nap on the grass.  I thought about all of the nice quilters I know as I worked on this project, and I kept wondering how they stay awake long enough to finish.  Several times the blanket just looked so enticing, I wanted to nap instead of sew.  (The pins kept me alert.)

As I wrestled through the final steps of this picnic quilt yesterday, I thought back to how casually I had put “sew patchwork picnic blanket” on my list.  This project was not hard per se, just time consuming as these things can be.  The finished blanket is 56″ x 64″.

I am not going to share any advice on doing this project since there are more qualified people to do that.  I consider this one to be more of a show and tell.  However, here are the specs for the curious: The finished squares are 8″ wide, and the back is a black fleece.  Since this is a picnic blanket, I did not use any batting.  I decided to use the backing as a wrap-around binding as well.

I ran into all of the problems you might expect with the fleece stretching and generally misbehaving, but I think it turned out ok.  I think it will be just perfect for days at the park.

More soon… Hope your week is going well!

Leave a light on…

Quilt_WIP

Oh my, I can’t believe how late it is.  I had planned to pop in here much earlier, but every project I picked up today took 8 times longer than I’d expected.  Isn’t that how it goes sometimes?  Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi.  I’m still here – working away.  If you want, you can pretend that these are the pictures of the finished picnic blanket I planned to show you today.  If I squint my eyes, I can almost see it.

Quilt_WIP2

Unfortunately, I’ve already made plans to sit on this picnic blanket tomorrow, so I may have to just keep on working.

Wishing you the best of weekends.  Take care, Kelly
