I know none of you would ever wait until the last possible second to get something for Mom, now would you? (It’s ok, you don’t have to tell.) I thought I would round up a few ideas that can be arranged on short notice.
I am a bit tired of all of the Mother’s Day gift guides out there that are so unpractical. Some of the high-priced lists are so weird. I know Mom does not want me to buy her a colorful umbrella or a very expensive scarf or a bowl. This is the Mom who every year without fail requests “loving peace and harmony,” a gift that we are still trying to arrange!
In the meantime, here are a few “consolation prizes” we’ve given her instead:
- Tickets to a show
- Dinner or lunch at a favorite restaurant
- Gifts from her favorite clothing store — I love Mom’s way of doing this best. For birthdays, we sometimes get her homemade gift certificates for a day of shopping. Then you get a new outfit and a fun day shopping with Mom.
- Her favorite perfume
- A jewelry box (better if it has a pair of earrings inside)
- Family photos – framed or arranged in albums
Any gift ideas you’d like to add? I hope you have found “just the thing!” Wishing you a beautiful weekend celebrating the special women in our lives and remembering those who are in our hearts. Lots of love, Kelly

[Photo: my sister (right) and I posing inside a Halloween shack. Note to self: get newer pictures with sister that don't have weird looking Halloween decorations in them.]
This has been a busy week! I had hoped to post yesterday before I drove down to San Diego to visit my sister, but alas — I barely got out the door on time. We are working on a project together. If you’ve every run a billion errands with two little ones in tow, you can pretty much picture our day. My niece and nephew were good sports, but by the end of the day, we were all ready to be home.
Do you know those people who can turn practically anything into an adventure? The ones who trigger hysterical laughter in the grocery store (or some place where you are supposed to be quiet like the library or church)? My sister is number one on that list. I never laugh so hard as when we are out driving around. I wish we were close enough to do all of our shopping together. Life would be a lot more entertaining that way.
Sigh… back to reality. I’m off to play some catch up…
P.S. – I caved. I bought one of those singing cards. I know, I know. I’m a hypocrite.

I have a confession to make. The first dozen times my husband asked me to set up the sewing machine so he could hem his jeans, I stalled. I thought this was going to be a disaster.
I should have known better. Of course he can sew.
The added bonus? He now appreciates the fancy sewing machine. “This sews so much better than the handy stitch.” Yes, yes it does. So it’s not wrong for me to give him a stack of my pants to hem, is it? I’d hate for such talent to go to waste.

Is it REALLY Friday already? I’ve been racing against the clock all week working on the fussiest sewing project ever. (Sorry, it’s a secret project — not this cute bag in the photo which I’ll tell you about in a moment.) Last night as I was showing the finished project to my husband — the one that took me 3 days instead of the 3 hours I had planned — he said “yeah, I was pretty sure that was going to be harder than you thought.” I don’t know whether to be thankful or annoyed that no one tells me these things until after I’m done!
I did sneak out for a bit yesterday to meet up with one of my blogging friends, Kalani of Kalanicut. We both took the Blogging Your Way course and then realized that we only live a few blocks away from each other. It was so nice to slip out for some tea and croissants and words of encouragement. She also brought me the most adorable present — this cosmetic bag that she made. I love the citrus fabric! It’s so fresh and has me craving orange juice. I heard a rumor that she might be working on more bags, and I hope that she does because these are so well made.

I am ready for the weekend. I am hoping to re-charge, because next week is looking busy-busy too. See you next week!

So, this should be interesting… My husband programmed the alarm clock to wake us up with this song off of the Muppet Show CD. Starting tomorrow, it should be peppy around here. I once went through a phase where I woke up each morning to the Electrical Light Parade music, but after a few weeks, that proved to be a little too intensely cheerful — even for me.
Thank you so, so much for all of your kind words about the fabric. I’m going to carry all of those good thoughts with me straight into the weekend. I hope you find some time to do whatever it is that you need more of – whether that’s play, rest, or daydream — or better yet, a little bit of all three.
