Author Interview: Jessica Levitt

[While I was at Quilt Market with Andover Fabrics, I had the chance to interview a few other talented designers + am so happy to share their incredible words of wisdom and encouragement.  I hope you enjoy!]

The first year I attended Quilt Market, I did not know a single soul so I nervously sent Jessica Levitt an e-mail asking for her advice.  She was launching her debut line with Windham Fabrics at the time.  As I flew to Houston that first year, I took comfort in the fact that I at least “knew” one person.  She turned out to be just as nice as she had seemed in her e-mail.  Not only did she cheer me on as I took my portfolio around to the various companies, but she also gave me a very sage piece of advice — “you have to want this more than anything else and just keep at it no matter what.”  Well, turns out Jessica was right.

I am so excited to have her here to answer a few questions about her new book — Modern Mix from Stash Books.  Jessica’s attention to detail and eye for design are pretty legendary, so it’s no surprise that the book is gorgeous.  I hope you find as much encouragement from Jessica’s advice as I have –

What are you most excited to be showing off at this Quilt Market?

My book! (Modern Mix) It’s such a long process writing a book that it’s thrilling to be actually holding it in my hand and even signing copies…

What keeps you inspired?

I never lack for inspiration.  I get it everywhere.  For sure coming to Market gets the creative juices flowing.  It’s like my brain is absorbing all the amazing design and fabulous colors and squashing them all together and hopefully spitting out something that is uniquely me.  I love to be inspired by nature, architecture, art, and even my children’s drawings.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

You have to find your own voice and be true to that.  It’s not easy to turn creativity into a career and if you want to, you’ll have to work hard and never give up.  I believe there is so much talent out there and it excites me to see new designers emerge.  I remember encouraging you when you first got started and look how that turned out!  If it’s your dream, just keep at it.

What has been the biggest surprise you’ve encountered when writing a book?

Well, I have a hard time letting go of control, so it was difficult to turn the manuscript over to the designers at Stash to make it all pretty.  I did get to give lots of input on the design, but I was doubtful that they could really capture my style.  Boy was I pleased when I saw that it turned out even better than I could have imagined!

Designer Interview: Cynthia Mann

Birch

[I just returned from Quilt Market, a fabric trade show in Houston, where my debut line with Andover Fabrics was previewing.  I had the chance to interview a few other talented designers + am so happy to share their incredible words of wisdom and encouragement while I am traveling again this week.  I hope you enjoy!]

I first met Cynthia Mann a few years ago when she was first launching her own organic fabric company, Birch Fabrics.  It has been such a treat to watch her business grow, and she is still the same warm, down-to-earth person I remember from that first conversation.  I consider her one of the smartest business women in the business, so it was a treat to pick her brain a bit.  (Check out her blog for more great photos of the booth.)  Here’s Cynthia –

What are you most excited to be showing off at this Quilt Market?

I’m really excited for our new collection, “Commute,” which comes out in January.

What keeps you inspired?

Seeing things that are made with the fabrics — what people are sewing.  Getting ideas for things people can use for today’s sewing and quilting.  Thinking about whether or not the fabric will be for sashing or binding or the trim on a dress.  The best designs are always inspired by the end use.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

Never let criticism get in the way.  Stay true to your design aesthetic.

Designer Interview: Pat Bravo

My conversation with Pat Bravo of Art Gallery Fabrics might have been the highlight of the whole show for me.  Pat has a beautiful sparkle when she speaks that can’t really be captured here.  Her words alone are lovely.  I know I will be coming back to re-visit them often.

What are you most excited to be showing off at this Quilt market?

I am so excited for my latest collection, Modernology, which came out because I was wondering how to apply some dark blues to my work which is not usually a color I use.  I was thinking were can I get some inspiration for this and not feel forced — for it to be something I like.  I began doing research of Swedish houses and found some lovely blues against white.  Against that white backdrop, the blues really came alive, and this inspired a modern, Scandinavian collection.

Pat_Bravo2

What keeps you inspired?

A lot of things.  I have photos that I have been collecting for many years.  Also traveling.  I traveled to Paris, and I am planning a trip to London.  This drives my inspiration.  Photographs that I take or collect and give me a feeling about a place or a mood.  I have a huge dream board where I put up swatches of colors.  Color brings a collection to life.

What one piece of advice would you give someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

The #1 thing is to always do what you like.  Never do something that is forced or that doesn’t resonate with you.  It will not turn out well and more importantly, you will not like it.  The second piece of advice — show your collection with passion!  Then the customer will be thrilled to buy your fabric.  And also — to show your collection with passion, you must feel passion for your designs.

I was hanging around the Seven Islands/Kokka area when I bumped into Melody Miller who is showing off her new line, Ruby Star Rising.  This is Melody’s third collection, and this girl is seriously a design powerhouse.  I cannot wait to see what else she has up her sleeve.  Melody gave lovely, succinct answers — don’t miss her answer to question #3.

What are you most excited to be showing off at this Quilt Market?

I really like the big combination print that pulls in all of the designs.

[Kelly's note: see photo below for more detail of the panel on the back wall -- so clever!]

What keeps you inspired?

I love vintage things — vintage shopping, collecting vintage fabrics, estate sales, thrift stores…

Melody_Miller3

What one piece of advice would you give someone else who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

I have a favorite quote that isn’t mine but it’s “leap and the net will appear.”  But also, you just have to keep trying.

Editor Interview: Susanne Woods

Stash2

[I just returned from Quilt Market, a fabric trade show in Houston, where my debut line with Andover Fabrics was previewing.  I had the chance to interview a few other talented designers + other interesting peeps + am so happy to share their incredible words of wisdom and encouragement while I am traveling again this week.  I hope you enjoy!]

I was so excited to grab a few moments with Susanne Woods, acquisitions editor from C+T Publishing and home of Stash Books.  She gave an incredible schoolhouse presentation of all of the upcoming titles from Stash Books, so I was really honored to have her answer some questions.  For those of you wanting to write books or sewing patterns, I think you’ll find this helpful.  Here’s Susanne –

What are you most excited to be showing at this Quilt Market?

I am most excited to be presenting the beta launch of our Patternspot.com site where hundreds of patterns are available for instant download. We spent many, many months developing this site to be beautiful and easy to navigate. I’m really proud of how it turned out and think it is an exciting opportunity for well known and less well known pattern designers to reach a huge audience without having to go through a gatekeeper.

Stash

What keeps you inspired?

In my role as the Acquisitions Editor for both C&T and Stash Books, I want our content to be a source of inspiration to others. That desire to provide innovative ideas and techniques to help others expand their own creativity keeps me motivated. I read through a lot of magazines and blogs and attend a variety of regional shows around the country, so what keeps me inspired is seeing a body of work or a single project that just stops me in my tracks.

Stash3

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who wanted to pursue their own creative dream?

Be professional! Once I think I want to work with someone, I research all about them. I follow their blog, their facebook, their twitter and pay attention to how they act if I see them at shows. I have walked away from promising authors in the past on the basis of their social media interactions and/or how they have conducted themselves in person. We need to have respected ambassadors for our lists, so as you establish your voice in social media and in person, remind yourself (before you post/attend) that a book editor, fabric manufacturer, distributor or magazine editor might be watching/reading. Our sewing community is fun and social, but it is always business.
