Day 26: Z is for Zany

SDZoo_koi

Well, we made it through the whole alphabet and here we are at Z.

I now have a very well documented reply any time I start complaining about feeling uninspired.  When I really start to think about the things I love and that keep me going, it’s almost overwhelming how much there is.  I must remember: pick one.  Start there.

For the grand finale, we’re heading to one of my favorite places.

ZZ is for the Zoo

It’s amazing how much nice cameras have changed the zoo experience for me.  I’ve always loved to spend a day rediscovering animals I’ve never seen before or have forgotten.  Of course, I love the “biggies” – the elephants, the giraffes, the rhinoceroses.  But lately, I like to dive in a little deeper and really study the animals that are small or hidden or difficult to photograph.  My husband got a zoom lens for the camera, and sometimes I feel like we are now at a completely different zoo since we can see lots of these animals up close.

One day in the zoo can provide me with weeks of artistic reference from overlapping feathers…

…to new shapes and silhouettes…

… and surprising color palettes.

And there’s always a funny face or two just to make you smile.

Do you have a special place you go to re-energize?  Do you document your inspiration in some way — a journal, a picture, a sketch?  I’m just curious.  I think this is such an important part of nurturing creativity.  I am constantly trying to take those experiences in nature home with me in some way.  Food for thought.

  1. I love all your zoo pictures! My trip to the National Zoo was a disappointment. I’m spoiled by so much time at San Diego’s. Balboa Park as a whole is a great inspiration, with the gardens, the architecture, the art, the theater, as well as the zoo.

I’m sorry to see your alphabet series come to an end–you’ve done an amazing job with it. *You* are an inspiration! :)
